As a sleep consultant, one of the most common things I hear from parents is, “I’ve been Googling all about my baby’s sleep issues, but I’m even more confused now!” If you’ve found yourself in a similar situation—searching the internet for solutions to your baby’s sleep challenges—you're not alone. In today’s digital age, it's easy to turn to Google for quick fixes, but Googling your baby’s sleep problems can often lead to more confusion, stress, and the overwhelming feeling that you’re doing something wrong. It can also lead you to an approach that doesn't suit your baby's temperament and your parenting style!

In this post, I’ll explain why relying on online advice can be counterproductive and why it’s better to seek personalised, professional guidance when it comes to your baby’s sleep.

1. Every Baby Is Unique—A Personalised Sleep Plan Is In Your Baby's Best Interest

One of the biggest issues with Googling generic sleep solutions is that most online advice is generalised. Sure, you’ll find plenty of well-meaning blog posts, forums, and articles offering advice on everything from bedtime routines to sleep training techniques. But here’s the thing: every baby is different. What works for one baby may not work for another, and a strategy that helped one family might not be right for your baby’s specific temperament, sleep patterns, or developmental stage.

Babies have different sleep needs depending on factors like age, health, environment, and even personality. For example, some babies may be naturally good self-soothers and can handle a little crying during sleep training, while others may need a gentler, more hands-on approach. What’s “normal” for one baby may not be the case for yours, and that’s completely okay.

Google can give you broad, one-size-fits-all advice, but it doesn’t take into account the nuances of your baby’s needs or your parenting style. As a result, you may feel like you’re constantly trying strategies that don’t seem to work! A personalised sleep plan takes into account your individual needs and requirements.

2. Online Advice Isn’t Always Evidence-Based

Another issue with Googling sleep tips is that not all of the information you find online is based on science or expert advice. Anyone can write a blog post or create a YouTube video, but not all sleep advice is grounded in evidence-based research. In fact, some of the suggestions you might come across can be outdated, potentially harmful, or not backed by current understanding of infant sleep. Everything I suggest to my clients is based on research and evidence that I can back up!

For example, advice about letting a baby “cry it out” for extended periods, or sleep training methods that don’t take the baby’s age or emotional needs into account, could actually cause more harm than good. Conversely, advice on avoiding sleep training altogether can also leave parents feeling depressed, sleep-deprived, and unsure of what to do next!

Professional sleep consultants ( like me), on the other hand, use current, research-backed methods to help families navigate sleep challenges safely. These methods take into account the latest research on infant sleep cycles, brain development, and emotional well-being, providing you with strategies that are proven to work and tailored to your baby’s specific needs.

3. Googling Can Increase Stress and Overwhelm

When you’re sleep-deprived, the last thing you need is more stress and confusion. Unfortunately, when parents Google their baby’s sleep problems, it often leads to information overload. You might end up reading conflicting advice—one article says you should never pick up your baby during nighttime wakings, while another recommends co-sleeping—and feel like you’re trapped in a cycle of uncertainty.

This overwhelming amount of information can make it even harder to make decisions, especially when you're already feeling anxious or exhausted. Constantly seeking solutions online can leave you doubting yourself, feeling like you’re doing it all wrong, or wondering why things aren’t improving despite all your efforts.

Instead of turning to the internet, seek guidance from a trained professional who can help cut through the noise. A sleep consultant will listen to your specific situation and help you find a clear, step-by-step plan that is tailored to your baby’s needs and your parenting style.

4. Sleep Training Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

One of the most common searches parents make when they’re dealing with sleep issues is how to sleep train their baby. But here’s the thing: sleep training isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.

While some parents may be comfortable with a more structured method, such as the Ferber Method (gradual sleep training), others may prefer gentler techniques with less crying, like the Chair Method or No Tears approach. It’s crucial to choose the sleep training method that aligns with your baby’s temperament and your parenting philosophy.

By working with a sleep consultant, you’ll receive a customised plan that takes your baby’s unique needs into account. Whether you prefer a gentle approach or a more structured method, a professional can guide you through the process and help you find the right balance for your family.

5. Professional Help Saves Time and Energy

While it might seem like a good idea to try every suggestion you find on Google, the truth is that all that trial and error can be incredibly time-consuming—and often ineffective. When you’re in the midst of sleep deprivation, you need solutions that work quickly and efficiently.

A sleep consultant can help you save time, energy, and frustration by providing you with a clear, tailored plan that addresses your baby’s sleep challenges. Instead of spending hours sifting through online forums, you can have a step-by-step guide that’s based on evidence and designed specifically for your baby’s needs.
